WB POST 4

I have never watched Star Trek before so I decided to start from the beginning and watch the very first episode The Man Trap. In the episode Captain Kirk and his crew arrive at a planet and meet with two women one of which Sergeant Mcoy used to be romantic with. Not too long into the episode one of the women notices that a crew member has been killed and she says that she saw him eat a plant that poisoned him. After Captain Kirk runs some tests on the dead crew member, he discovers that the man could not have died from the poisonous plant. We later find out that the women who calls herself Nacy is not who she says she is. Nancy is really a creature that lives off salt and has the ability to change forms whenever its wants which is why it disguised itself as Nancy. The creature went arounf attmepting to kill crew members but in the end, Lenard kills the creature and saves Captain Kirk.

Star Trek isn`t the type of science fiction I am super interested in mostly because there is a lack of action but I`m sure it appeals to many other people. I`ve noticed after looking at the different types of science fiction that I am more interested in the type that deals with vampires and werewolfs instead of space. I think that science fiction that deals with space is good if the show is exciting and the acting is good. Science fiction has evolved from shows like Star Trek up to more present modern day shows like Dollhouse. I find that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer are popular becasue they are easy to relate to as the show is based on a girl in highschool. Shows like Star Trek have a more selected audience becasue many people aren`t interested in space travel or technology.

This was the first episode of Battlestar Galactica that I have ever watched and I surprisingly found it to be quite interesting. I was a little confused at the beginning but as I kept watching I actually found it quite intriguing. I have always been interested in technology, and when robots will be created which is why I enjoyed watching this episode. Technology is advancing at a fast pace every single year which is why a plot like this show may actually be a possibility someday. I thought the show had a very interesting plot by having a war going on between the humans and the human made robots-the cylons. The robot/human war reminded me a lot of Star Wars because there was also a war going on between robots and humans in this movie but there were differences that made it a unique science fiction show. One part that was quite shocking and really caught my attention was when one of the cylons killed a baby. This scene was disturbing and really showed the audience that the cylons have no emotion or care for what they do at all. It’s crazy to think that something us humans created could be capable of such evil and attack us. This show is interesting because it really makes us think about future technology and that we need to be careful about the robots that are created in the future. I think there should defiantly be a limit on how far artificial intelligence can go.

Poem "One Inch Tall" by Shel Silverstein

One Inch Tall

If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.
A crumb of cake would be a feast
And last you seven days at least,
A flea would be a frightening beast
If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,
And it would take about a month to get down to the store.
A bit of fluff would be your bed,
You'd swing upon a spider's thread,
And wear a thimble on your head
If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.
You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.
You'd run from people's feet in fright,
To move a pen would take all night,
(This poem took fourteen years to write--
'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Shel Silverstein

I have always enjoyed reading poems by Shel Silverstein ever since I was in elementary school. I think they are really creative and fun to read which is what interests me when I look at poems. I also like reading serious poems with a deeper meaning but I like how the peoms by Shel Silverstein are fun and lighthearted. This poem in particular is quite creative and it caught my attention when I saw the title. It describes what life would be like for someone who is one inch tall and some of the challenges they would have to face. I love reading these kinds of poems becasue they are so random and fun that it forces people to use their imagination. Its a good idea to not get caught up in the seriousness of life and bring some childhood memories back by reading the witty and funny poems of Shel Silverstein.

"Normal Again"

This episode of Buffy was interesting in that it was about Buffy fighting her inner self instead of some other villan. She believed she was in a mental insitution and that her life in Sunnydale was not real. It was a unique plotline in that it really makes the audience question what is real and what is not. Buffy was having a hard time trying to figure out her situation and if the life she has known in Sunnydale was real or just her imagination. She started to think about her life in general and how the idea of vampires and demons seemed fake and that she actually was a sick patient in a mental insitution. Sometimes we get this idea in life where we arent sure if what we are going through is actually reality or if it is just our imagination.

Favorite T.V Show- Entourage

I'd have to say that "Entourage" is one of the funniest show's I've ever seen. The show's storyline is based on Mark Walberg's rise to fame and his experiences in becoming a well known movie star. The series is about Vincent Chase, a good-looking, young actor whose career is on the rise. Vince's three best friends Eric, Johnny and Turtle are all from Queens, New York, and help Vince in his journey to becoming an A-list movie star in Hollywood California. I find the show to be so funny because of the four main guys and the witty comments they make throughout each episode. It gives the audience an inside look on what the life of a celebrity looks like and the people they encounter and deal with. I think the show did a really good job of casting the main characters becasue I find the characters in the show to be the best part. One of the funniest guys in the show is Vincent's manager Ari who is always on Vince's case about something. I think this show is so popular to people, becasue it gives viewers a chance to look at the celebrity life. Everything seems so easy and fun in the show becasue all the guys do is go to celebrity parties, buy nice cars and meet new people. However the show also gives viewers a look at the pressures of maintaining the status as an A-list movie star and the difficulties that come along with it. Entourage is really entertaining and funny and I would definatly recommend it if you haven't seen it before!

Commonplace Paper Problem

One of the biggest problems I am having with my paper is converting my analytical reserach topic into my commonplace topic. I feel like I am still wrting as though it is my analytical research paper and not my commonplace one. I need to change my style of writing to a more persuasive form instead of being so imformative and descriptive. In my research paper I really focused on a specific scene in the episode of Buffy so it makes it difficult to find a more broad topic from the scene I looked at. I've decided to look at how the role of women in society has changed over the past 50 years. This relates back to Buffy becasue she is a role model for young women and proves that they can have a significant, powerful roles in movies. Women 50 years ago were not looked at in this way at all and never would have any sort of role like Buffy's.

Commonplace Topic?

So Im thinking of using the idea of female empowerment as a main theme for my paper. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer we see how females are in control and are the confident, powerful ones especially in the first episode, "Welcome to Hellmouth." One of the main reasons Buffy the Vampire Slayer is such a hit show is becasue of her female power status as the hero. People like watching movies or shows where the girls are the ones who are fighting evil and taking control. It is this quality of female confidence and power that is attractive to people. It proves that girls don't always have to be the weak and powerless ones that must be saved. In many horror movies for example, we see how there is always that dumb blonde girl that gets killed. Buffy's role as the vampire slayer completely changed this sterotype of the dumb blonde, weak girl into something much more exciting to watch. Buffy is a positive role model for young women and proves that a girl that is strong and knows how take charge, can be something that is attractive.
