Commonplace Topic?

So Im thinking of using the idea of female empowerment as a main theme for my paper. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer we see how females are in control and are the confident, powerful ones especially in the first episode, "Welcome to Hellmouth." One of the main reasons Buffy the Vampire Slayer is such a hit show is becasue of her female power status as the hero. People like watching movies or shows where the girls are the ones who are fighting evil and taking control. It is this quality of female confidence and power that is attractive to people. It proves that girls don't always have to be the weak and powerless ones that must be saved. In many horror movies for example, we see how there is always that dumb blonde girl that gets killed. Buffy's role as the vampire slayer completely changed this sterotype of the dumb blonde, weak girl into something much more exciting to watch. Buffy is a positive role model for young women and proves that a girl that is strong and knows how take charge, can be something that is attractive.

  1. I like your CP idea alot. It is different from other shows in a way that Buffy is the hero here. Most shows have the guy being the power overall. You should definitely expand on the parts and places how Buffy is this feminine power and how she proves to society that she is different from other girls.

  2. I like this idea. It also parallels a trend in society that girls can do anything guys can do. It's important to note that it wasn't always this way though, and that's why society believes that girls are the 'damsels in distress.' To make your idea more relevant, you could talk about female power-houses. Oprah, Hilary Clinton, and I suppose even Sarah Palin.

  3. I too like your idea a lot for your paper. Most shows and movies do have the male lead as the hero, but it doesnt always have to be the guy to come to the rescue. I know a lot of girls will enjoy reading your paper, but I'm not sure if I can say the same for guys. Oh well.

  4. I think that you have a very compelling topic here and girls will definately enjoy reading it. A small suggestion though...it seems as though in your paper you are not only promoting female strength, but also putting down guys. I think that to make your CP paper be enjoyable and interesting for all to read, you may want to say that both females and males can be the heroes and possess the same heroic qualities.
