WB post 5
As I look back on this class I am actually quite proud of myself and how my writing ability has improved. I was worried about writing about for a public audience but after writing out many blogs I have become quite comfortable with it. If you are unsure about writing for an audience then this class will definatly be beneficial for you. You will be required to watch certain episodes of different T.V shows and then blog about them. At first I was unsure about blogging because I have never done it before but after writing out a few I actually started to enjoy it. It allows you to express your thoughts on different subjects and really state how you feel. It also allows you to read other people's blogs and see their opinions on different subjects.
In order to be successful in the assignments for English 110 make sure you listen in class and understand the assignments. If you are unsure about something then ask the teacher and be sure to check the daily schedule. Another important note is to stay on top of your work and don't put it off. If you leave things to the last minute then it makes it difficult to do them well. I'm sure you will enjoy English class as long as you stay on track and understand the assignments.
Good luck!

WB POST 4
Star Trek isn`t the type of science fiction I am super interested in mostly because there is a lack of action but I`m sure it appeals to many other people. I`ve noticed after looking at the different types of science fiction that I am more interested in the type that deals with vampires and werewolfs instead of space. I think that science fiction that deals with space is good if the show is exciting and the acting is good. Science fiction has evolved from shows like Star Trek up to more present modern day shows like Dollhouse. I find that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer are popular becasue they are easy to relate to as the show is based on a girl in highschool. Shows like Star Trek have a more selected audience becasue many people aren`t interested in space travel or technology.

Poem "One Inch Tall" by Shel Silverstein
One Inch Tall
If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.
A crumb of cake would be a feast
And last you seven days at least,
A flea would be a frightening beast
If you were one inch tall.
If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,
And it would take about a month to get down to the store.
A bit of fluff would be your bed,
You'd swing upon a spider's thread,
And wear a thimble on your head
If you were one inch tall.
You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.
You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.
You'd run from people's feet in fright,
To move a pen would take all night,
(This poem took fourteen years to write--
'Cause I'm just one inch tall).
Shel Silverstein
I have always enjoyed reading poems by Shel Silverstein ever since I was in elementary school. I think they are really creative and fun to read which is what interests me when I look at poems. I also like reading serious poems with a deeper meaning but I like how the peoms by Shel Silverstein are fun and lighthearted. This poem in particular is quite creative and it caught my attention when I saw the title. It describes what life would be like for someone who is one inch tall and some of the challenges they would have to face. I love reading these kinds of poems becasue they are so random and fun that it forces people to use their imagination. Its a good idea to not get caught up in the seriousness of life and bring some childhood memories back by reading the witty and funny poems of Shel Silverstein.

Quote from Paper
After viewing many horror movies and seeing the same innocent looking, dumb blonde girl getting killed by the monsters, Whedon came up with the idea for Buffy. He states,“It was pretty much the blonde girl in the alley in the horror movie who keeps getting killed...I felt bad for her, but she was always much more interesting to me than other women. She was fun, she had sex, she was vivacious. But then she would get punished for it.” It was this thought that sparked Joss Whedon’s mind and gave him the idea to create something different. He turned the good-looking and blonde cheerleader, who seemed innocent, into a killing machine known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

WB prompt 3- Teeth Whitening
The next site is different from the first as it uses statistics as a way of persuading people to use teeth whitening. It talks about how important it is for people in today's society to have a nice white smile. It also goes on about how movie stars and famous singers have influenced people to have whiter teeth. "The whiter-than white smiles flashed on magazine pages and movie screens by superstars like Brad, Britney and Beyonce influence our desire to perfect our pearly whites." This is a smart article becasue it uses statistics to back up its statement that having white teeth is good becasue it will make a person more attractive and all the celebrities are doing it too. Although this statement might not be true, most people believe it becasue the article uses poll percentages to back up its statements.

Is it Art
Gary Moeller’s article, “ Is it Art?”, with his comparisons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Beatles movie of 1968 “Yellow Submarine”, and then to the film “The Wizard of Oz”, are a stretch. His comments, these straight jacketed characters are nowhere close to the hair-raising monkeys on the fright scale and they really are not even as foreboding as the clowns of the Yellow Submarine” are not convincing. His attempts to bring together some common ground between these visual works that are separated by time and years of special effects and societal change are weak. Of course, there is a common thread in each of these – all have villains and the desire of good to conqueor evil. To say that these films are high art, such as a Van Gogh or an Andy Warhol is not a fair comparison. These pop culture works may be a whole other category of art- it is a matter of personal perception and to some extent the education and beliefs of the person viewing it. However, to compare the Meanie Clowns of the Yellow Submarine, or the Flying Monkeys from The Wizard of Oz to the evil grinning Gentlemen of the Buffy episode “Hush” serves no purpose. Each may be a type of horror art—spooky mind provoking art, with the fear factor in each unrelated to the others. All forms of these films are art- some stimulate and drive a culture, and all incorporate both the threatening and the sweet. Too much evaluation of an art form, such as what Moeller had done, whether it is Buffy on its own or against another, takes away from experiencing the art as a whole, whether it is shocking, satisfying or leaves you wanting.
Fear the princess screamed
Wilcox’s article on the T.V. series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, specifically the “Hush” section is a provocative depiction of this television series. He makes detailed analogies of the episode with his comparison of it to a good fairytale, i.e. the princess, the evil doer, the hero, and the resolution. The evil all white gentlemen in this episode are wearing suits, evoking a power, money connection to the viewer, almost a bad boy group of guys to be dealt with by an empowered female."We are shown these dead, white, well to do upper class, old fashioned males spreading out across the town and taking over.” This quote is fascinating because typical fairytales whether creepy or not may have had good looking, white well-off, males in the story. As youngsters, viewers can identify strongly with that type of guy power, and more specifically girls who identify a certain type of white male in a sexual fantasy. This could be in the form of the good person Riley, Buffy’s love interest, to the floating suited gentlemen entering your bedroom, the opposing bad villain. As viewers watching the series know, the show is full of emotional hits. Buffy had a sexual relationship with Angel, a vampire/still with a soul kind of guy. Her departure here from adolescent girl, to adult in college shows another emotional connection a female audience would identify with. Buffy has dreams that prepare the viewer for intrigue to follow. In her dream she kisses Riley, her sexual interest and a good boy. After kissing him, the monster white males come and she has the power to destroy them –this too is seductive and compelling. She realizes later after she and Riley have destroyed the menace, that the substance of the relationship was not just the kissing and fighting. It is interesting that it is not just the white male villains who take on the fairytale role and cut your heart out.

Highschool is Hell
Primary Source Video
So I just finished watching the second episode of the first season of firefly. I've actually found the show to be quite entertaining and action packed. I definalty need a Science Fiction show to be filled with action and suspense otherwise I tend to get bored. An interesting character that was introduced into the show was Niska, who hired the Serenity crew to get the goods for him. He definatly seems like the type of person you wouldn't want to have on your bad side or mess up a deal with. The scene where he shows the dead guy hanging up by his feet to the crew was pretty disturbing. However, the captain seemed unaffected by this and went through with making the deal with Niska. There was one scene that I found quite interesting and proved my prediciton of the captains more sensitive side being revealed. This was when the captain and Zoey found out that their stolen goods were medicine which was not what they had intended to steal. The captain then decides that the medicine should be retuned, becasue he saw all the sick people that needed it on the train and sympathized with them. This scene was important to me becasue it showed a more emotional and modest side to the captain. The show ended on a dramatic note when we learn that Niska and his men are after the crew becasue they did not complete the job that he wanted them to.

Writing Blog 1
Hey everyone, so I'm sure you've all taken english in highschool, well my english class in highschool wasn't your typical class. Our class was made up of athletes with busy schedules. My english teacher would give us a list of assignments and then we were to complete them on our own time. This meant that we didn't have to work on english in every class. We never had any deadlines or due dates but we were expected to get the list of assignments done by the end of the school year. We occasionally would have group disscussions about certain topics and have some class essays but the majority of our work was done on our own time. I have already found english in collage, after only a few days, to be completley different from what I am used to. I now understand that english in collage isn't just reading and turning in essays, but it is more about analyzing and having group discussions to really understand certain topics. We will gain new ideas and opinions by listening to others and what they have to say. I have never been required to do any english work on a computer so this is also new to me. So far, I enjoy using a blog becasue it allows you to express your thoughts in a more casual manner compared to an essay format. I've never had any experience writing for a public audience but I'm sure that after getting more experience with it, I will feel more comfortable. I also think that using commonplace is a good idea becasue it will teach us to go beyond the writing we are used to in highschool. We will not only learn how to improve our accademic writing but we will learn how to relate and persuade the public in our writing as well which is very important for our future careers.

Overall, I thought Serenity was exciting to watch. It was a little slow at the beginning but as the show progresed it started to get more suspensful and dramatic. I thought there was a good amount of action throughout the course of the show which kept me interested. As more characters were introduced the plot became more intense and unexpected. The part where the doctor's sister was introduced was quite dramatic and surprising. I thought this made the plot much more exciting as I found out that the doctor's sister is a genious who is being tracked down by the "Alliance". This added some emotion to the storyline as well because the doctor's sister was held captive by the government and he was doing as much as he could to protect her. There were quite a few twists and turns in the plot line as well that added some suspense. A good example was when the government agent on board was held captive by the crew, and offered one of the crew members money to help him. This made the show a lot more intense becasue I didn't know if he was going to turn his back on the crew and follow the government agent or remain loyal to his captin. In the end, I really enjoyed watching "Firefly", and I would recomend for others to watch it.
